Materials You’ll Need

Before we dive into the pattern itself, gather the following materials. Please note that this what we used for the pattern, you may choose different yarn and hoop – please see some considerations below.

  1. 20-25gr of 4ply 100% cotton yarn, 200g=800m, 2(fine)
    You can try following yarns:
    **Sunset Gradient yarn cake
    **Cotton Kings – Sultan – New Berlin yarn cake
  2.  1.75mm hook
  3.  25cm hoop (or bigger if your crochet is loose or you will take a bigger hook)

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • MR – magic ring
  • SLST – slip stitch
  • Unf. – unfinished
  • Init. – initial
  • ST – stitch
  • Ch – chain
  • SP – space
  • HDC – half double crochet
  • SC – single crochet
  • DC – double crochet
  • 2DCtog – crochet 2 unf. DC together
  • 2TRtog – crochet 2 unf. TR together
  • Petal – unf. TR + next 3 unf. DC + unf. TR crochet together
  • Popcorn – Work 5 double crochet (dc) stitches in the same stitch. Drop the loop from your hook. Insert your hook from front to back under the top 2 loops of the first double crochet of the group. Grab the dropped loop with your hook and pull it through the stitch.

Mandala Crochet Pattern

Round 1

Make MR. Crochet 12 SC in MR.
Join with SLST into 1st SC.

Round 2

Ch2 + 2 unf. DC in the same ST = crochet together (counts as 3DCtog), Ch5.
(Skip one ST, crochet 3DCtog, Ch5) – repeat till the end.
Join with SLST into top of 1st 3DCtog.

Round 3

SLST to Ch5, Ch1, 7 SC in Ch5 SP.
(Skip 3DCtog, make 7 SC in Ch5 SP) – repeat till the end.
Join with SLST into 1st SC.

Round 4

Ch1, HDC in the same ST, HDC in next 2 ST, 2 HDC in next ST, HDC in next 3 ST.
(HDC in next 3 ST, 2 HDC in next ST, HDC in next 3 ST) – repeat till the end.
Join with SLST into 1st HDC, leaving the working loop to the back of the work.

Round 5

All round in 3rd loop only!
Ch2 (counts as DC), make DC in next 3 ST, Ch2, make DC in next 4 ST.
(DC in next 4 ST, Ch2, DC in next 4 ST) – repeat till the end.
Join with SLST into 2nd Ch of init. ST.

Round 6

Ch2 (counts as DC), DC in next 2 ST, Ch3, make DC in Ch2 SP, Ch3, skip one ST, make DC in next 3 ST.
(DC in next 3 ST, Ch3, make DC in Ch2 SP, Ch3, skip one ST, make DC in next 3 ST) – repeat till the end.
Join with SLST into 2nd Ch of init. ST.

Round 7

Ch2 (counts as DC), DC in next ST, Ch5, skip one ST + Ch3 SP, make SC in DC of R6, Ch5, skip Ch3 + one ST, DC in next 2 ST.

(DC in next 2 ST, Ch5, skip one ST + Ch3 SP, make SC in DC of R6, Ch5, skip Ch3 + one ST, DC in next 2 ST) – repeat till the end.

Join with SLST into 2nd Ch of init. ST.

Round 8

Ch6 (counts as DC + Ch4), SC in 3rd Ch out of Ch5 SP, Ch3, Popcorn in SC of R7, Ch3, SC in 3rd Ch out of Ch5 SP, Ch4, skip the rest of Ch5 SP + next ST, make 2DCtog.

(Ch4, SC in 3rd Ch out of Ch5 SP, Ch3, Popcorn in SC of R7, Ch3, SC in 3rd Ch out of Ch5 SP, Ch4, skip the rest of Ch5 SP + next ST, make 2DCtog) – repeat till last Ch4, skip the rest of Ch5 SP + next ST, crochet unf. DC in next ST and join into 2nd Ch of init. ST.

Round 9

Make SLST’s to SC of R8, Ch2 + unf. DC in the same ST crochet together = 2DCtog, Ch3, 2DCtog in the same ST, Ch2, SLST + Ch3 + SLST into top of Popcorn ST, Ch2, 2DCtog + Ch3 + 2DCtog in next SC of R8, Ch3, SLST + Ch3 + SLST into top of 2DCtog of R8, Ch3.

(2DCtog + Ch3 + 2DCtog in next SC of R8, Ch2, SLST + Ch3 + SLST into top of Popcorn ST, Ch2, 2DCtog + Ch3 + 2DCtog in next SC of R8, Ch3, SLST + Ch3 + SLST into top of 2DCtog of R8, Ch3) – repeat till the end.
Join with SLST into top of 1st 2DCtog.

Round 10

SLST to Ch3 SP, Ch3 + SLST in the same Ch3 SP, Ch5, crochet 2TRtog (place RIGHT leg into 1st Ch2 SP and LEFT leg into next Ch2 SP), Ch5, crochet SLST + Ch3 + SLST in next Ch3 SP, Ch5, crochet 2TRtog (place RIGHT leg into 1st Ch3 SP and LEFT leg into next Ch3 SP), Ch5.

[Crochet SLST + Ch3 + SLST in next Ch2 SP (between two 2DCtog), Ch5, crochet 2TRtog (place RIGHT leg into 1st Ch2 SP and LEFT leg into next Ch2 SP), Ch5, crochet SLST + Ch3 + SLST in next Ch3 SP, Ch5, crochet 2TRtog (place RIGHT leg into 1st Ch3 SP and LEFT leg into next Ch3 SP), Ch5] – repeat till last Ch5 and replace it with Ch2 + DC into 1st SLST.

Round 11

Ch3 (counts as TR) + unf. TR in next Ch5 SP crochet together, Ch3, crochet 5 DC into top of 2TRtog, Ch3.
[Crochet 2TRtog (RIGHT leg in 1st Ch5 SP and LEFT leg in next Ch5 SP), Ch3, crochet 5 DC into top of 2TRtog, Ch3] – repeat till the end.
Join with SLST into top of 1st 2TRtog.

Round 12

Ch2 + 4 DC in the same ST = make your 1st Popcorn, Ch6, skip Ch3 SP, crochet Petal using next 5 ST (unf. TR + next 3 unf. DC + unf. TR crochet together), Ch6.

[Crochet Popcorn in top of 2TRtog, Ch6, skip Ch3 SP, crochet Petal using next 5 ST (unf. TR + next 3 unf. DC + unf. TR crochet together), Ch6] – repeat till the end.

Join with SLST into top of 1st Popcorn ST. Do not cut the yarn.

Attaching to the hoop

Use some yarn pieces to attach your mandala to the hoop.
Make SLST to 3rd Ch out of Ch6 SP, Ch1 and make SC in Ch6 SP + around the hoop.
Continue with 8 SC around the hoop till next Ch6 SP. Make SC into Ch6 SP and around the hoop.
Feel free to add or take SC around the hoop if you need until they will hide the colour of the hoop.
Repeat till the end. Fasten off. Join with invisible stitch. Hide yarn tail.

All done!
